What kind of Saab do you drive that has variable valve timing? "This allows your engine's computer to do things like advance the timing of the opening of the intake valves and..."
At any rate, you're right about the energy density issue. The higher the detonation resistance, the more thermodynamically efficient the engine can run. In the case of the Saab trionic system (Previously accomplished with APC, right?) is that it can adjust the spark timing, and the (turbo) charge pressure to eliminate knock.
Since ethanol has such a high detonation resistance, the charge pressure can be increased, extracting a much higher percentage of the chemical energy in E85, as you said.
As to what type of fuel I use, I seem to always put premium in my 9000 Aero (5spd). I figure I didn't buy my 9000 Aero to be the most inexpensive car I'll ever own... why treat it like that?
