Macs are indeed less prone to viruses. Almost all of the viral hacks that are out there is specifically written for Microsoft's operating systems. That being said, you can buy a really well equipped PC for about half what you'd pay for a Mac and outfit it with some really good viral protection. Just be sure to update the protection software weekly.
My household is a Mac household BTW. We do have one Dell laptop that I bought for my son to take to college. It was infected within a couple weeks and became unusable. He ended up using a 2000 Mac PowerBook (Pismo) that I had laying around and had no issues with that. We did get the Dell scrubbed, and he will take that back to school next week.
