Had two Macbooks "die" within 30 days of buying

If you have an Apple store convenient, I recommend going with the MAC, but if the store is not somewhere you can get to easily, I'd look for a PC.
We bought two Macbook Pro laptops at the end of June.
The superdrive (dvd) on mine stopped working (no eject) the night I bought it. The laptop was replaced two days later by Apple. They could have replaced the drive but they swapped out the whole computer. On the good business side, they offered to upgrade from a 13 to a 15 since they were out of the 13 in the hardware configuration I had - an offer I took. In hindsight, I think I should have waited for them to get more 13's in. I don't need the extra screen size or weight.
My daughter had an audio problem with her Macbook Pro 13 come up after almost 4 weeks. Again, the genius at Apple just replaced the entire laptop.
Luckily for me, there are a few Apple stores close by. Not everyplace is as lucky.
Macs cost more than the price leader PC boxes advertised at Best Buy, but when optioned similarly, they are pretty close in price. Compare a Macbook Pro 13 to a Dell Studio XPS 14 rather than a Dell Inspiron 13.
One thing I like about the Mac compared specifically to the Dells (the other brand I shopped) is that the hardware seems much more well designed. With the Dells, they advertise a fast front side bus but then do not match the bus speed to the memory. If you have a 800MHz or 1067MHz bus, why use 667MHz RAM? Why sell (or offer options for) a computer with 6GB of RAM (or even 4) if the operating system can only address 3.
With the Mac, it is all coordinated. RAM speed matches the bus so things run as expected. The apps that come preloaded work well together.
Finally, I'd go with the Macbook Pro 13 rather than the iMac. If you don't like the screen size, there are many monitors you can attach to it get the big desktop look.
On the other hand, in addition to the Mac laptops, I also bought a Dell hybrid (small form factor) computer for the family. It has the same RAM/bus mismatch as I saw in the Dell laptops but it is a nice computer for a home station. It was half the price of the Macs.
