There are a lot of flash and pdf exploits out there that can hit you just by visiting a website, totally without your knowledge. Some of these get into circulation via common legitimate banner ad systems or get onto otherwise reputable websites via server exploits that place them. Downloading questionable software is obviously a high-risk activity, but doing everything right won't necessarily keep you safe, though it will reduce your odds.

Owning and operating a computer isn't like owning and operating a toaster. The toaster is pretty much going to work, and there isn't much you can do to it or that can happen to it that will reduce its functionality. Computers are like cars - there need a certain type of treatment, attention, and preventative maintenance if they are going to be reliable. If more people would understand that, there'd be a lot less shock and horror at computer crashes, and probably a lot fewer at-risk systems on the internet. But, given how poorly the average person maintains their $25,000 car, it's no wonder that $1,500 computers have as many problems as they do.
