if you'd like a windows system to start up and down faster... enable hibernation. about 15 seconds each way no matter how many apps you have in any state. it writes an image of memory to disk to hibernate, and reloads that image back to memory upon startup. it doesn't take any battery power either. you can do this on both desktop and laptop systems. it just requires an amount of disk storage as a function of the amount of RAM you computer has.
