One is a not-so-ditsy old lady who quit driving after her Lexus ES-330 took off on her twice, the second time causing an accident. The second is a pretty alert Boomer with lots of driving experience. He sold the car before it could happen again, he totally lost confidence in the vehicle.
In both incidences it was not a mat issue, and both drivers were spooked by the seemingly arbitrary experience. Guess they convinced me that something else was going on. I googled for other's experiences and found a wealth of info from drivers who had similar experiences. My gut says there is a real problem.
Toyota has reprogramed a number of vehicles, and is planning the fail-safe brakes over accellerator, which should handle the rest. I'm thinking there are just growing pains with the newer drive by wire systems.
