It is getting harder to make cars look different for 3 main reasons:
1) Aerodynamics: For fuel efficiency you need them so don't expect to see a production car with "fins" anytime soon.
2) Need to meet many different countries safety standards, such as ever notice why all of those European cars have very upright grills? It is to meet Europe pedestrian protection standards, so the grill and hood have to come up to a certain height, so any impact would be at thigh level and not lower on the leg.
3) Need to design cars that will appeal to many different markets. There was a lot of hoopla when Honda said they designed the latest Civic to appeal to the Chinese market, I am betting the Buick was too. And remember all that discussion on this board around Ford finally building "World Cars".
