I'm not sure what you're expecting but within the constrains of a four door sedan I think it's a very destinctive looking car. The current 9-3 is a nice car but is a 3 series wanta-be (like everything else in that category) and the 9-5, while attractive, is a bit bland in sedan form. There are a lot of constaints in terms of space utilization (example: the VW CC is pretty but gives up a lot of interior space for the look), and it has to continue Saab styling themes. If you compare it to the European competition it has the freshest look of anything it compeats with. The 5 series has looked pretty much the same for years, the A6 is actually more conventional looking then it was in '99 when it first came out, and the E class has evolved pretty slowly stylingwise. Volvo is about the only premium European manufacturer that truly marches to a different drummer in term of styling, though not always in a good way. Traditionally European sedans haven't been known to be flashy--it's a very conservative demographic, owners keep their cars for long periods of time and don't want to see major changes every few years. Yes the new 9-5 is understated, because IT'S SUPPOSE TO BE. Personally I think it's very elegant and distinctive, it definately looks like a Saab and won't be confused with anything else. What more do you want?
