I november of 2002 my oldest son was crossing US-1 in Coral Gables, FL where he was a student. He was crossing at a marked crosswalk, with the green light, and had made it to the heavily cross-hatched area adjacent to the median.
A girl in a Honda (famous for their early adoption of pedestrian friendly crash design) accelerated away from a stop on the intersecting street, and while lighting her cigarette cut thru the cross-hatched safety zone while turning onto US-1.
She hit my son, he bounced off the hood (denting it severely), went face first thru the windshield, came back out of the car thru the same hole his face had made in the glass, and skidded to a stop on the asphalt clad in shorts and sandals.
The Honda was towed from the scene while my son was able to walk to the near-by hospital. (They made him ride in the ambulance but he was fully mobile and P-O'ed) The stupid horn dog cop attempted to cite my son for not wearing a seat belt!!!!!!!!! While the attractive you lady he was hoping to get lucky with was not cited.
Had my son been struck by any other brand of vehicle I am certain he would have died at the scene. Instead, he finished his undergrad degree on time and is now a practicing attorney in DC.
Moral of the story - pedestrian friendly vehicle design really works!
