Could not agree more with your and Roger's comments. I am both a bike rider and a pedestrian walker . To me it is appalling how many drivers ignore the rights of walkers and bike riders - IMO pickup trucks are the worst - there are so many in denver.
I wrote an email to the mayor of the city where I reside regarding my experience using crosswalks - more than 50% of the drivers won't stop for a pedestrian and if fact a good many will speed up to beat you to the crosswalk should they see you approaching one. the mayor responded to my complaint with a question " where in the US do drivers stop for pedestrians in crosswalks"
When I walk with my wife she is amazed at how I will step into the crosswalk and force the driver to obey the law. I've had them glare at me, curse me, blow the horn - but most stop and when I've finished they stomp the gas and gun their engine driving away - total dimwits.
Only once did I have to phone in a license number - 911 call as the driver intentionally brushed me with his car while I was in the crosswalk.
He was apprehended and charged with vehicular menacing - charge was later dropped to operating an unsafe vehicle with my consent.
I make it a point to always stop for pedestrians and yes vehicles design to protect pedestrians is a good thing.
