Aw, c'mon. I bet every experienced dealer tech can say the same. John Q. Public is generally noted for being a jerk, bonehead, clueless, you pick the adjective. And sometimes it's true.
But those stories go the other way, too. I (and many here) have been treated with contempt by more than a couple of dealers (multiple makes) when daring to question the statements of "trained" techs and service managers. This is not the case with most indy shops I've dealt with. I find that in general a good indy shop is more reliable and more willing to help out a customer than a dealer. And the work is at least as good, if not better. And indies like the fact I can talk technical with them, but dealers generally don't like this at all.
I've been doing most of my own wrenching for 40 years and know my limits and threshold of pain. When I hit a job that I can't do I go to one of my indies. I've also seen my share of botched DIY jobs by people who don't know a wrench from a screwdriver, but I've also encountered pro techs who go by the rule, "Never force anything, use a bigger hammer."
Point is, no one's perfect or blameless when it comes to car servicing and repair.
