I don't have a beef with Saab going upmarket for now, as in the short term it seems more viable to be a small maker of pricier niche cars than anything else, but I worry about staking the company on competing with the BMW 3-series. It's just such a compettive space, especially with the new A4 and C-class being so compelling. Just look at how hard just about every car company has tried to be competitive in that space and more or less failed (Lexus IS, Acura whatever, Jag X-type, Volvo V something, etc.) and these are companies with huge resources. The only one that has really done it with success is Infiniti. And even if Saab makes the best car in the world, Car & Driver and the rest of the magazines might call in "good but quirky, and with a baulky shifter" before going on for three pages about how the 3-series is a gift from the gods.

I very excited about the new from Saab, and especially that Saab already has two great new models ready to go. Spyker's talk has been very compelling at this point, in my opinion - it's amazing GM has set the bar so low that I'm shocked that an auto exec could come across as knowledgable and positive. I hope we see cars value priced to BMW and Audi, but that will draw customers in by being unique and creative, rather than trying to go toe to toe with those cars on their own turf.
