I think we’ve got to be a little more realistic regarding pricing on new vehicles folks. We are not going to see any type of quality in a $16K car and retro doesn’t mean inexpensive. Taking the Mini as the example, the Cooper S (turbo/supercharged motor) runs $22,300 to START, and you can finish it well above $30K with stability control, 17” wheels, leather interior, some fancy electronics and more.

If we want CHEAP cars, the cars we get will in fact be CHEAP. What we really should consider is value for money. I’d say a well appointed 9-3 Sportcombi Aero XWD with a nicer interior for $35K would be good value if it stood up in comparison to an Audi A4 or a lower end BMW 3 series (both of which are far more expensive). I’m talking Canadian dollars by the way and that price is way under MSRP in Canada for the ’09 (which ran up to about $50K – or call it $40K at near death time).

As far as less expensive Saabs go the 9-1 might fit the bill if it ever comes out, and yes it might compete with the VW GTI (which isn’t cheap by any means) but it will not be good value compared to used Saabs, which will always be better value on the low end of the price spectrum.

Let’s be thankful the brand is still around for now and see how it stakes its territory in the mid-high end market (because that’s where they want to play).

Regards,

Theo
