By upscale do you mean in luxury or in size? I don't think upscale in luxury necessarily means less road feel. Porche certainly has road feel. It might be more to do with the objectives of the company - eg GM may have wanted saab to make the car less raw to gain wider appeal. I don't actually think the new 9-3 is more luxurious than a fully equipped og9-3 or the c900. In many ways it is less so (eg leather quality, button quality etc). Just nowadays, what was extras back then, is standard (leather, sun roof etc).

Viggen was definitely raw. The torque steer even on the base model OG9-3 was significant. That said, in my experience, the c900 has both a better road feel + tracks better/is more tossable than og9-3 (but not as fast). don't get me wrong, I really like the 9-3 hatch! They certainly are a lot of fun and handle pretty well, but that was the 1 thing I noticed going from a c900: get up some speed and do a sharp S, the og9-3 wallows a little, whereas the c900 tracks like it's on rails...

upscale in size... well, the 9-5 just isn't as fun as 9-3 around town... but as a cruiser... it is amazing! outstanding car!

I too would love to see the new 9-3 throwback a little to the c900 days both in style + road feel/handling (+ if possible, simplicity)...
