On your suggestion I looked at the Dell Studio models - the XPS ones are out of my price range (<$800) but the regular Studio 15 fits the bill nicely. Well equipped for ~$150 or so less than the Lenovo. However I'm a really hard sell on the glossy screen, and without putting my hands on it I can't judge the build quality. Two qualities of this old Dell Precision I'm typing on that I can't sacrifice, even to save a few bucks or to get a bit more power.
As for the 64 bit, the benefits do seem to be somewhat theoretical, but my understanding as a few others pointed out is that the machine can only use more than 3 GB of memory if you have a 64 bit OS. hmm.
