Definitely stick with the Thinkpad, IMHO. Also, I would go with 32-bit. I had a computer with 64-bit Windows and you would be surprised at how often I couldn't find drivers for a particular peripheral, or no 64-bit version. If you get 64-bit Windows, you're not going to be running any old software that you own. Probably have the stuff (at least) on CNET downloads won't work either. Also, if you want to really speed up the computer, skip the processor and memory and 7200rpm hard drive and swap in an SSD hard drive. I've heard very impressive things re: these. Might void your warranty though. My $0.02.
Of course, if you're feeling adventurous, you could always splurge and get a Thinkpad W700ds for around $2200. Dual screen.
