I had a Satellite M35. Ask some laptop service people about those. In two years I went through SIX motherboards due to a design defect. Toshiba was well aware of the design defect but refused to fix it - in fact, they shipped "repaired" mobos to the service centers that often were DOA - at one point my service center went through three boards before they got one that actually worked. The only reason that I was able to keep that laptop running two years was that there was a major class action suit against Toshiba that got us all an extra year of warranty. The hard drive also died along the way.
Being a total moron, I bought another Toshiba (Sat L355D) as they had exactly the features I wanted at the price point I needed. I rationalzed that the previous model must have been a fluke. Unfortuately this one also died at the 11 month point and needed a mobo, a fan, the LCD had issues, adn the built in mouse did not work. They replaced all the components and it's running now. (However, the mouse stopped working again after less than a month.) Since I was still under warranty, I decided that I'd buy the TOshiba extended warrranty - unfortuantely TOshiba will not sell you the extended warranty, even though you are still under their factory warranty, if the machine is more than nine months old (you can guess why).
FYI - I am very easy on my laptops, they are essentially local home machines. I take them out to a client maybe once a month or so. Othewise they live the good life.
