Not sure about linux, but my 2c is that pc's used to be 16 bit. Then they moved to 32 bit and are moving to 64 bit. As Window's installs take up increasing space to install and run, having the extra RAM that is available in 64 bit OS's is worth considering for the future, particularly since all applications will eventually move to 64 bit and the lifespan of a pc is four years. Note: which version of windows 7 you buy dictates the the amount of RAM it will support!!! Note; all of Windows server 2008 software is 64 bit now. So microsoft is obviously pushing pc's into the 64 bit arena. See link for info...
