I think the article is a lot of statistical nonsense. Approximately 440,000 people die each year due to smoking related issues. Statistically speaking, when you look at the whole population, a much higher percentage of the population dies from smoking than from auto accidents so you could conclude that my (the average of the population) likelihood of dying from smoking is very high.
However, I don't smoke and I don't hang around with smokers, so I won't be dying from it. Likewise, I don't drive a Toyota.
FYI - not that it's critical, but last I heard, there were 54 fatalities due to sudden acceleration. I believe the lower number might be the one TOyota admits to or the NHTSA has "confirmed" as "definitely" sudden acceleration.
FYI 2 - If you want a wake up call, listen to the tape of the passenger in the backseat of the San Diego incident calling 911 as their Lexus went out of control at up to 120mph, before they all died in the crash.
