You missed the point entirely...... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Mon, 5 Apr 2010 18:39:04 In Reply to: I disagree..., CY, Mon, 5 Apr 2010 10:37:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You've got a couple of paradigms which you stated in bold, "driving is dangerous" and "statistics mean absolutely nothing", and you say you are an engineer? Hmmmm....no stat class ever? I would think that an engineer would rely on statistics and data to do your job.
"Very dangerous" is very relative. There's a certain element of danger to every activity and statistics can and do measure that. Walking is indeed dangerous. Tripping, traffic, weather and other hazards will find a complete unprotected person. I like to point out that motorcycling is a managed risk and that a smart motorcyclist protects himself completely from head to foot, unlike Lifespan is entirely different measurement/statistic/data than the risk of walking.
Everyone might agree that walking is safer than driving and driving is safer than flying, seems irrefutable, but if you're going cross country, measuring risk by the mile, than flying is the safest followed by driving with walking the most risky. They say you're more likely to be killed on the way to the airport than by a plane crash.
I would assume you're a Saab guy so how do we know a Saab is safer than a Toyota? Those darn statistics again.
