the measurement was per mile! yeah of course the risk of death while walking is higher than the risk of death while driving when compared per mile. Cars go faster!! How many people walk 10000 miles a year? vs put 10000 miles on a car?? A time based comparison would not make walking sound more dangerous. This is a clear case of statistics being abused to create a biased (and fallacious) argument.
On some level though, the chances of the unintentional acceleration happening seem low enough, that for a Toyota owner, they'd probably get the recall whenever + be fine... that is, until they died of boredom from driving an appliance!!!
