Can't we all just agree to assume that "driving is dangerous"?? I thought that was a given.
My point about "statistics mean nothing" could be more appropriately stated as "statistics can be skewed ridiculously in order to suit your own purposes." How about that? That's honestly what I learned from my stats classes. (and thank you, James, for your defense of statistics' use in engineering).
My main beef with the "walking" statistic is the fact that nothing is defined, nor any calculations explained. It's all about some undefined concept called "driving risk" - what does 19x more danger mean? OMG! I think I just understand all of a sudden... when you are driving in a car, you are relatively safe from bears. But bears can easily attack you when you are walking a mile, and if you stay walking, the bear will catch you and eat you. (If you start running, your risk of danger will be reduced to only 1800%)
I don't agree that risk can be generalized down like this... I think you need to understand risk for each situation. There will be cases when driving is safer(who is driving? what is the condition of the vehicle? etc), or walking is safer(weather conditions, physical fitness), or even taking a canoe would be safer(traveling up the Amazon?)! Like you say about motorcycles, it applies to all of these - they are managed risks!

I don't mean to get anyone all upset - I just want to understand if this article is for real, and how they came to these conclusions!
