IMHO, devices like iPhone and iPad (and their Android competitors etc.) are driving the final nail into the print media as an information distribution mechanism: as the last strong holds of print-media, the toilet seat and the beach, are finally opening up to digital devices. Books and articles will be much more accessible in the digital format. The barrier to entry for publishing will be much lower.
As for the archiving advantage of books vs. digital media, a memory card nowadays can store more books than the entire Library of Congress paper book selection . . . and devices for reading them can be charged/powered by hand-cranked generators
