The same debate exists in the medical community. A lot of doctors HATE the proliferation of online medical information. Many doctors have a tendency to be a bit, ahem, arrogant and don’t like having their authority questioned by their patients, but there are many negatives to so much online medical information from the physicians point of view (I mean, how many hypochondriac patients calling and emailing everyday would it take to drive you crazy). However, most research shows that informed patients that can engage their physicians about their illness lead to better healthcare. I expect the situation is similar for the service manager. Informed customers are better, but they can probably be darn annoying too.
For Dexcool, my internet opinion is to use it if you car came factory filled and has never seen anything else. Otherwise, don’t use it. The product doesn’t claim extended change intervals in that situation and there is a lot of anecdotal evidence suggesting it can cause harm in that case. Who know if it really does, but with no benefit at that point, and being more expensive than ‘green stuff’, there’s not really a reason to risk it in my mind.
I’m pretty superstitious about coolant, but then I have 316k on my original head gasket…
