"Paperless office" has been a joke for three decades running . . . Digital displays have been falling short on two accounts:
1. portability
2. less strain on the eyes
Both factors are changing now, with the introduction of devices like the iphone/ipad and EInk type displays that are not back-lit but more like paper.
Back to the original topic at hand, the most revolutionary aspect of digital media vs. print media is not the display format/device, but the barrier to entry for content creation. When physical typesetting (and its associated high fixed cost) is no longer necessary, the digital press turning out one-off books, with almost zero fixed cost associated with a "run" to amortize, fundamentally changes the modus operandi of publishing.
