yeah, one should accelerate through turns rather than let off the gas regardless (ie decelerate before going in)... but I know what you're saying... people make mistakes...
Though decent all seasons on an AWD vehicle will probably "get you through winter", if you are doing any amount of driving in really poor conditions, winter tires will be worth it. I know lots of people who "get through" winter on all seasons + FWD (and we get full on winter up here!), but I get through it with a lot more fun + safety with good snow tires... AWD vehicles do not stop any better than FWD vehicles, and stopping distance is one of the big reasons to buy winter tires (studded tires are even better!). You can't go fast (safely) if you can't stop fast. Adequate clearance and good weight distribution, handling, and predictability completely outweigh AWD for me in winter... actually, I don't even care too much for ABS brakes in winter either...
That said, I can see how some living in states with "lighter" winters +/or mainly urban driving conditions might be better off/happier with decent all seasons.
