You might want to add the Rockies to your list of places where studded snow tires are needed even with AWD. I've gotten by with all season tires on my Subaru (my second winter) but I live and work in the same place and don't have to drive a lot. If I'm still here next winter I'll definately get some studded snows. When I lived here in the 80's I had a Jetta with studded snow tires but the only problem with front wheel drive in the mountains is that when you're going uphill, all the weight tranfers toward the back of the car. I went for a few wild rides in that car, I almost think RWD would be better.
