great overview + really important points re tire wear which are often not considered (especially in reviews).
I guess we all have different biases on winter tires based on use based on our needs etc... I go more for deep snow qualities, but that compromises dry road conditions (common most of the time in urban areas) + noise + fuel economy... I'm not convinced that studs have been made obsolete (other than by outdated government regulations)... I got to test back to back on almost identical Saabs brand new Nokian Hakkas without studs (top of the line + directly competitive with Blizzaks) vs 10 year old studded Hakkas. The old ones with studs blew away the brand new unstudded but heavily siped tires on ice. Absolutely no question: night + day. Snow was comparable. Dry, well, the studs make a lot of racket! The new studded tires are better than the old. So it depends on one's interests, but if I was allowed studs in my region, I'd get them for sure...
