At no time did even the Nokian commercial producer presented all these tests as conducted under the same test conditions with the same initial vehicle speed across different tests. I seriously doubt Hakka 5 without studs being better in snow/ice than Hakka R, unless Hakka R is marketed as a competitor to the likes of LM. Actually comes to think of it, we are not entirely sure whether they were comparing to WS60 or LM60, as the two have almost identical tire patterns.
My personal preference is vehicle safety and enjoyment in all four seasons. I do not at all drive at W or even V rated speeds even in summer, or even the full potential of T rating (118mph) for that matter. Grand Touring and Standard Touring tires are more to my liking with their quiet and comfortable ride qualities on ice-heave damaged local roads, and in my opinion better suited to the 9-5 and 9-3 type vehicles (especially wagons and convertibles). There are quite a few Grand Touring and Standard Touring tires with very good snow/ice performance when new. Roads are ploughed around here in winter. Although we can get up to 12" of snow at times, the tires are still in contact with pavement far more often than with snow/ice even in winter. I tend to focus on actual performance of the tires on my car during their entire service life on my car, not just the 1% of the time that's called the first few days. Having a nominally "winter" tire that get worn down after the first 5-10k miles and deliver inconsistent or even worse performance in snow than new all-season tires do would hold no appeal to me at all.
