I agree, it's an infomercial, not a peer reviewed scientific study. Unfortunately, it's the best data I could find quickly + don't have the time to investigate deeply enough to satisfy every possible attack on their methodology (as reasonable as those questions might be)... Again, it's armchair engineering... next line will be: was the driver/test team double blind? Also reasonable, but *any* testing of this sort is easy to pick at, and while one can in principle "prove" anything with a test, I see no reason for them to bias the results of their own tires... we have no idea what order the tests were actually done in anyway... it's all speculation. That said, I don't think it is unreasonable data... whether or not one wants to believe it is up to them I guess... you've made assertions that the hakkas are inferior to all friction tires... have you driven them? most people who have make the opposite assertion... so I don't think my commentary, that they are at least somewhat comparable, is out of line...

btw, the water pumps in the R are not greatly unlike similar water pumps in Michelins and probably other brands... it probably helps, until, as you note, they wear down...

As far as the driving part, even in summer, I find I have to often manage the speed of cars behind me to make space (and of course one always should do that at a red light)... part of defensive driving... but you're right, in winter it is even more critical to maintain space as stopping distances increase. I do enjoy testing the limits of our tires + car in snow, but only when + where it is safe to do so. I'm not advocating crazy in any way! That said, knowing the limits of one's car is a good thing... and I know the limits are pretty darn good with the unstudded Hakkas, and they were ridiculously good (seriously close to bare pavement, on ice) with the studded hakkas...
