We have a hydronic system in our 3 year old home that works very well. It is a complex system, and requires a separate air handler and ducts for air conditioning. Years ago we had a home with hot water base board heat that was simple (1 pump and no electronics or fans) and ran for the 14 years we were there without any attention.
Newer high efficiency systems can be much more complex, our current system has 10 pumps 8 zones, heats the house, garage, and hot water. It has electronic control boards for the pumps and a high efficiency boiler.
The life of the electronics is a concern, the circuit board for the boiler is in the boiler enclosure which can expose it and the draft fan to the corrosive affects of recirculated flue gas. Also there are many sensors, bits and pieces that can fail over time. I can see where much of it would have to be replaced in 10 to 15 years if lightning doesn't get it sooner.
The combustion chamber and combustion sensor have to be cleaned every year or so. This isn't a big deal if you DIY, otherwise it is a service call.
Is it worth it? My feet stay warm and we use less propane than others in the neighborhood. Otherwise it is expensive to install and like other high efficiency heat will require $$ in the future.
