Although most people refer to domestic systems with coils buried in soil, rock, or even a lake as geothermal, it seems that industry is trying to promote the term geoexchange to differentiate it from large scale systems that generate steam to drive a turbine as in classic geothermal.

With a geoexchnage system, at least the one I was considering for our house, you will not need supplemental heating if its installed correctly as the depth at which the coils are buried should be at a constant 45 a 50 F ( ground temps below the frost line) year round. That is the key advantage for these systems versus a traditional heat pump that interfaces with the atmosphere (which I ended up getting due to cost issues and a question of how long I'd be staying in the house), traditional heat pumps try to exhaust heat in the summer time when it is hot outside and obviously are no good if the outdoor temps are below say 35 F. A geoexchange system sees very constant temps at the coil so in summer it cools better and in the winter it heats better without a backup system for when temps fall below about 35F.

There are no boilers or flue gasses (because no natural gas) in a geoexchange system and the system I was looking at used forced air to heat cool the house so there were no humidity issues. That said I prefer radiant heat (radiators) to having warm air coughed at you constantly by the air handler. Of course radaint heat doesn't work for cooling so if you need that it is out of the equestion or you need separate AC of some type.
