Good explanation.
Because it is quite old and has solid log and chinking walls in the interior as well as the exterior our house had separate heating and cooling systems for the ground floor (oil heat and a central AC unit), and upstairs (air to air heat pump) upstairs. They were old and expensive to operate
Three years ago when we built an addition and garage we decided to replace everything. The main part of the house now is heated and cooled by two closed-loop ground source heat pumps. For the addition and heated garage we have a pump-and-dump ground water system. We have to clean the water filter a few times a year, but its well provides our household water and what is "dumped" we use for garden irrigation and to keep our small pond going when the springs dry up in late summer.
This system cost almost twice what buying three air-to-air heat pump systems would have, but will pay for itself in three more years. We no longer buy oil, and our electric bill is lower than before even with rate hikes and an additional 1,200 sq. ft. to heat, cool and illuminate. Even this week, when temps have ranged from single digits all the up to 27F the house is warm without auxiliary heat.
For anyone who plans to stay in place for a few years and can handle the initial outlay geothermal/geoexchange is the way to go.
