I don't know what your aversion is to Japanese cars is but they've really ramped it up in terms of the things we used to buy European cars for (fit and finish, materials, driving feel) in the last few years. At the same time the Europeans have been cutting back on all those things. I'm driving an 05 Subaru Outback LL Bean with the 3.0 H6. It's 245 horse, 0-60 in around 6.5 as I understand it. I sat in a new Audi A6 recently and I think the interior felt slightly cheaper. It's sure a lot better looking than Subarus ever were. Another overlooked alternative is the Subaru Tribeca. I'll buy another Saab when I no longer need AWD, but if you want AWD, Subaru is the way to go if you don't want a lot of expensive maintenace headaches. You can probably get a 07/08--and I'd definately go for the H6 (standard with Tribeca).
