I actually wouldn't say a Subaru NA 4 is sluggish in all respects: it's very quick 0-10, and so quicker than a 9-5 around town... it's just that it's a dog on the highway (imho), at least without a stick... all comes down to gearing, and I think that (more than AWD) is why it sucks so much gas... the 4 speed on a Forester is comparable to a c900 3 speed automatic (except more reliable)... cruises at high revs + wastes a ton of fuel.
fwiw, all my friends who drive Subies get them with sticks, don't drive that aggressively, and report reasonably good fuel economy numbers (about the epa numbers)... the difference in a saab is the fuel economy is still good even if you choose to go a bit faster!
