it depends what you're looking for + what you like about the Saab. If you must have AWD, for the amount you are looking at spending, I agree with others here, a Subaru Outback is most likely going to be the best choice economically. Decently safe, decent to repair, decent handling, good cargo room. Others will be better to comment on the taller AWD vehicles which may be of interest to you (the few I've driven I've hated).

Where the Subarus don't measure up to a 9-5 (for me) are: comfort (seats!!), fuel economy, power delivery, and general predictability. I suspect a newer 6 cyl Outback like No Snaab is driving, especially with a stick, would improve many of those drawbacks. A 4 with a stick will at least improve fuel economy. My experience with Subaru automatics (especially combined with the NA 4) has been that they are pretty ghastly (geared for off the line performance, too few gears combined with little low end torque, lots of fishing, slow shifts, etc)...

Personally, I couldn't give up the driving characteristics of a Saab for AWD (I love driving in snow). If I was looking at other brands, #2 would be Audi, #3 might be Volvo. I have a friend with a 2005 A4 Avant (which he bought in the mid teen k$'s used at the end of its' warranty) + it has been great + not too expensive. Others have an Allroad they got used (with an excellent + complete history) + likewise afaik it's been great (though I've heard they can be very costly to repair). I wanted to like Subaru + prior to extensively driving a bunch of them would have looked at Subie as my second choice... not anymore... goes to show how valuable it is to get behind the wheel of a few options... it's a shame it's so hard to rent euro wagons!

I suppose it's out of your price range, but the 9-3x is looking more + more appealing to me as a family snow-car (for the touch more clearance, more so than the awd)...
