Lest my comments below discourage someone from looking at Subarus, I should reiterate that my experience was only with the 2.5L + 4 speed automatic (and imho it was terrible, both '09 Forester + 08 Legacy wagon, Legacy at least had tolerable handling, Forester was poo). Good to hear the 3.0L has a timing chain, and 5 gears should make a big difference (assuming they geared it sensibly) - I know my Subaru driving friends don't have too many complaints about fuel usage with the 2.5L, but they all have sticks (=5 gears).
As I mentioned previously, the Subaru is probably overwhelmingly the economic choice when it comes to AWD wagons (and sounds like 3.0L is the overwhelming choice in Subies). That said, for myself, I couldn't give up the Saab qualities I'm used to just to get AWD (and I don't worry too much about Saab repair costs, which in general, if one stays out of the dealer, are not bad), but different people see different things in cars + approach things differently + that's all good...
