B6 is pretty solid. On my A4 1.8TQM, I get ~32 mpg. Almost 100K, no major problems, although timing belt service at 75K. The car has been much more reliable than my wife's old NG900, but one data point is certainly not a trend. The 4 cylinder is simpler than the V6 and leaves more room in the bay for working. Nothing like working on my SPG, but for a modern car it seems "easy".
Being part of VAG, there are occasional electrical gremlins that sometimes work themselves out, but still not a terrible car to work on.
For some reason, Audi avants seem to be quite popular right now commanding more $ than sedans. Good luck finding one although for mid teens you're probably looking at a real good example.
Feel free to email me questions.
Take Care,
Nate
