Switched to 05 Outback 3.0 after extensive looking around and comparisons 1.5 years ago, from my SAAB #6, an 04 9-5 Aero 5MT. Would not look back. So much more versatile, if less fun.
Also note that 3.0 and 2.5 Subes are totally different in the way they drive. 2.5 is sluggish, noisy and unrefined. 3.0 is cream-smooth, you just do not hear it unless press hard, lots of torque.
For AT driver, 2.5 = 4 speed (crap), 3.0 = 5AT (good).
Consumption numbers are worse than with 9-5, true. But if you just sit with a calculator and compare your spendings over a year or so - the'Roo wins hands down, as you balance somewhat worse consumption against less frequent oil changes, cheaper oil, possible saving on tires, statistically higher reliability, etc.
