Audis, Mercedes and Volvos are the high-priced options, but spending more doesn't mean you really get more or a better value. They ARE realy nice cars, but buying one used and priced in the mid-teens means you will have to expect and budget for some pricey (as in 4-figure) repairs. These are all high-end cars with complex, sophisticated AWD systems--and that means expensive to fix.
Like you, I'm no fan of Asian cars, but when it comes to AWD I'd go for a Subaru. Personally, I don't like the seats, but that's me (6'2", 210 lbs). My 5'4" daughter thinks the seats are fine, and she may well wind up in a Suby when we retire her old Saab 9000.
The Honda CRV isn't bad either. They are NOT a Saab 9-5 in terms of road feel, handling and overall performance, but they are solid cars and lots of people in Vermont, Maine and Colorado are big-time Subaru fans.
Alternatively, look at a Ford Escape. Ford is building decent cars these days. They are affordable to own and can be fixed anywhere.
