The Saab company of the 1980's and prior produced many cars that were in many ways fantastic (and in a few ways not). But they were so far out of the mainstream, when the "mainstream" kept getting narrower and narrower, that eventually they couldn't find enough buyers for their "quirky" cars, especially at a sufficient price, to keep going.
So GM buys Saab, makes them more mainstream, and does some cost-cutting, although not enough to make Saab massively profitable. Engineering- and design-wise, I think they made many things better, kept many of the things that were already good, and made a few things worse (ask me about hazard-flasher switches sometime :^( ).
The question is, now that Saab is on their own again, 1) can they find the right balance between being "quirky" and generating good sales, and 2) can they bring in enough $$ to support manufacturing plus all the engineering and design expenses necessary to compete in today's market. I'd like to think they can, but it's a tough call.
