I think turbo fours are just fine *now* - but they weren't fine in the '90s or most of the '00s - even lack of one in the first gen 9000 may have set it back. (And don't get me started on the 2.5l V6 - blech) Saab has always done a good job with turbos, but most other manufacturers did not and it gave turbos a bad name. When I bought my first turbo Saab I got a lot of laughs - these days, turbos get a fair amount of respect from a wide audience.
That said, Ford is making a really big deal about EcoBoost and the press seems to be gobbling it up - but nobody else is rowing that boat. It's quite possible Ford may end having to reverse its position to remain competitive. Several manufacturers have flat-out said they can meet economy and emissions targets without the weight or complexity of turbo systems. Only time will tell. But, right now, the automotive world is in upset - Ford making turbos, BMW preparing to move FWD. It's a crazy time for sure. I wouldn't bank on anything.
