I didn't know where to start in quantifying this subsidy to our oil companies, but this is certainly one approach and as valid as any that I could come up with. I actually think that the number is higher, as it seems that more than a fifth of our efforts are directed to this region - but let's go with the $250 billion per year.

Here's another fat one: bank subsidies. The recent bank bailout is projected to cost somewhere between $50 billion to $2.3 trillion - how vague is that? Meanwhile, the chairman of JP Morgan Chase (my bank) received stock options worth $17m and a "cash incentive" of $5m in 2010, on top of his basic salary of $1m. Oh, and they recently paid his relocation expenses from Chicago to New York. Nice work if you can get it.

As the owner of a small business ("where the job growth is") that actually paid taxes last year, it is truly annoying that mega corporations such as oil and banks get government subsidies, while the bank that I helped bail out won't extend credit to my business.
