it comes down to what it does, what's the ROI.
There were certainly some real benefits from the early days of the space program, and the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions were truly inspiring and a demonstration of national skill and pride. But that was long ago and far away.
As romantic as the idea of going back to the moon, or even to Mars may be, not to mention how cool it would be for the people doing the trip, it's hard to justify in terms of a return on investment. Unmanned vehicles can tell us a lot of what we'd like to know and that's probably the best way for humans to go past earth orbit.
At least until we can go fast enough to actually get someplace. Warp speed, Sulu!
