Get a clean 9-5, a 2004 or later with service history and you should be OK. Our '03 (at 103K miles) has been very good.
VWs have a bunch of known electrical/electronic problems that are frustrating to deal with and can be expensive. The girl who cuts my hair has a Passat and she says there's always something (and asks me about my Saabs). A pal who used to have a New Beetle said the same thing. Was glad to see it go. Because of the issues they seem to have (according to others on this site) they may not be good long-term cars like a 9K can be, so what works for you may depend on how long you plan to keep the whatever VW you get.
That said, VWs drive great. Very different feel than a Saab, basically more responsive and have better agility, IMHO. There's more tuning options for them as they are more common and can be somewhat easier to tweak. Some stuff is hard to work on, but that's true for any car.
