going back to the water cooled days, I sold new ones in the eighites and later in the early 2000's. In addition I was a dealer specializing in European imported cars under $5K up to five years ago, so I have experience with cars that have a few miles. And I used to buy every descent VW I could get my hands on because they always sold fast. But the fact is VWs have always been relatively expensive to own and manitain even going back to the air cooled cars. In recent years as they've gotten more complicated they're gotten much worse. As much as I like them as cars, I wouldn't under any circumstances buy one new or used with my money. While I could give you many examples to back that statement up, suffice it to say based on my experience with European cars of all kinds Saabs are cheaper to maintain that anything you can name. Also, I've owned 4 9000's and consider them one of Saab's greatest cars. But they were also the most expensive Saabs to maintain that I've owned. My last Saab ('98 900SE) was like a Honda--I went months without looking under the hood and my mechanic thought I was mad at him because I never brought the car in. You'll find late models Saabs to be much, much more reliable than your 9K and a much better choice than VW.
