the same can be said for any used car... unless you have a great history, you can have problems...
2004+ 9-5 seems to have solved many of the problems of the earlier cars... 2002+ solved a bunch of issues also... 2001 and earlier aren't bad but it's wise to be wary of early model years of any car... the 9-5's are all great cars + can be had at great prices if one is patient + knows what to look for... some here say the ng 9-3 2005+ are even more reliable...
