The old 900 pre 94 had 1/8" holes in the pickup that only stopped the bigger nuts and bolts (that's always dropped into the case at an oil change) and they never had any problems with oil sludge or oil starvation except in some very few cases where the oil pressure reducer valve got stuck due to a piece of debris passing through the screen.
