My mom bought a 2000 1.8t Jetta new.
It only has 96k on it.
Here is a list of what's broken:
aux air pump 50k
maf - warranty
rear o2 around 50k
front 02 around 65k
water pump (60k - impeller separated)
fan module
ac pressure switch
ac compressor magnet thingy
dipstick tube (split during an oil change)
driver side window switches 2x
plastic coolant tube one the head (plastic ridge that holds the o-ring fails)
plastic coolant tube to thermostat
coil packs (one failed - replaced all 4 - spares in trunk - 90k)
alternator (90k)
When I did the coils the intake manifold gasket was replaced as it was leaking - mystery oil leak solved.
When I did the timing belt (fun job) the other water pump was nearly dead.
As the car sits now:
mystery coolant leak again - possible head gasket as the oil appears to be up a tad
ball joints and tie rods shot
shocks shot
ps pump leak at the seals
sr has been inop for a long time
windshield/door/sr leaks - look up the service bulletin for cleaning the drains
3rd gear syncro is getting crunchy
My 86/87 spg's are more comfortable and get better mileage.
I've had a 2000 GTI and a 2002 GTI - I'd never have one out of warranty even though I can do all the work on them.
