I had been looking at a new Rabbit a couple years ago, when I realized that, for the same $15k or so, I could have a few years young 9-5. Much more car for the money.
As for financing, you've gotta look for good places to borrow. Your local bank won't do you any favors when it comes to used car loans, but Credit Unions can be a great deal. When I financed the 6 year old 9-5 Arc I bought three years ago, I was borrowing at 4.99%, which was pretty good for a used car loan at the time. That car got totaled, and insurance paid the loan. FFwd to 2010, found a nice 2000 9-5 SE, went back to my CU, and the used car loan rate was now 2.99%! If I needed a loan today, their rate for new and used cars is now 1.99%...
Not every CU offers these rates, and not everyone qualifies for the rate (or the CU...), but thy are out there.
